KTTB is a radio station in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota, 96.3 FM. KTTB's nickname is "B-96". The station primarily plays hip hop and rap music, but bills itself as a Rhythmic because of the area's small African-american population. The transmitter is licensed to Glencoe, Minnesota with the transmitter located near Watertown, west of the Twin Cities, so reception in the eastern part of the metro area around St. Paul has some limitations. However, the station can be picked up throughout the metro area, and in other small markets such as St. Cloud and Mankato.
History
The frequency was originally licensed as KQXA by the FCC on August 15, 1991. The station signed on as KARP, which played a mix of classic rock, oldies, country music and farm reports.
To increase the value of the station, KARP's owners decided to seek FCC permission to increase power and move the transmitter closer to the metro area. The transmitter was moved farther east and power was increased from 50,000 watts to 100,000 watts, giving the station a city-grade signal over much of the west metro area.
In 1998, KARP was purchased by a group of local investors who formed Blue Chip Broadcasting. They desired to bring an urban contemporary music FM station to Minnesota for the first time. The new B96 debuted on June 1, 2000, and eventually, the station was sold to Radio One, a company that specializes in formats geared toward the African-American community. The previous format and KARP call letters were eventually moved to the 106.9 FM frequency, licensed to Dassel as the new B96 was born.
Despite the fact that their music is heavily focused on R&B/Hip-Hop, KTTB's format is listed in R&R and Mediabase as CHR/Rhythmic in part due to the market not having a large African-american audience and at times will add a Rhythmic Pop track to the playlist.
Among the station's DJs are Tone E. Fly and Peter Parker.
